Sugar in Fast Food: What's Sweet That Doesn't Look Sweet
Sugar content across major fast food chains — not just desserts but buns, sauces, dressings, and drinks — with specific product data and comparisons.
July 3, 2026
Fast food sugar hides in places that don’t register as sweet: burger buns, chicken breading, dipping sauces, salad dressings, marinades. A meal from McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, or Chipotle can deliver 60-80g of sugar before touching dessert or a sweetened drink.

Where the Sugar Hides
Buns and bread. Most fast food buns contain 3-8g of added sugar, used for browning, taste, and yeast feeding in enriched bread doughs. A Burger King Whopper bun has 5g; a McDonald’s Big Mac bun has 5g.
Marinades and glazes. Teriyaki, honey mustard, sweet and sour, and barbecue-style preparations add 8-16g per serving. Chick-fil-A Grilled Nuggets (8 piece): 1g. But Chick-fil-A Grilled Spicy Deluxe Sandwich uses a honey-roasted marinade: 11g sugar in the sandwich alone.
Salad dressings. McDonald’s Sweet Balsamic Dressing: 12g per packet. Chick-fil-A Zesty Apple Cider Vinaigrette: 11g. Fat-free dressings typically replace fat with sugar to maintain palatability.
Fruit and oatmeal items. Items marketed as healthy often contain significant added sugar. McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal: 31g sugar (13g added). McDonald’s Fruit ’n Yogurt Parfait: 23g sugar.
Coffee drinks. See the coffee drinks article for full data. McDonald’s medium McCafé Caramel Frappé: 72g.
The Drink Is Usually the Problem
In most fast food meal analyses, the beverage accounts for 50-80% of the sugar. Switching from a medium Coke to water eliminates 55g of sugar from a McDonald’s meal, dropping from 64g total to 9g.
This is why nutrition researchers consistently identify sweetened beverage reduction as the highest-impact single change in reducing dietary sugar.
Value Meal Psychology
Fast food combo meals are structured to increase the likelihood of purchasing a sweetened beverage. The combo pricing typically makes adding a drink cheaper than a standalone drink, and the drink is usually upsized for a small premium. The result is that most fast food customers consume a large sweetened beverage with their meal even when they might not have purchased one independently.
A 2017 study by Bleich et al. in PLOS ONE found that reformulated default combo meals, where water was the default beverage rather than soda, reduced beverage calories purchased by 16% and sugar by 19g per visit.
Sugar in Fast Casual
“Fast casual” chains, Chipotle, Sweetgreen, Shake Shack, Panera, are perceived as healthier alternatives. The data is mixed:
- Chipotle: Very low sugar if avoiding sweetened drinks and salsas
- Sweetgreen: Salads can have 10-25g of sugar depending on dressing
- Panera Bread: Mango Smoothie 66g; Cinnamon Roll 49g; Strawberry Poppyseed Salad with dressing 23g
- Shake Shack: Regular ShackBurger 8g; Chocolate Milkshake 82g
The presence of kale doesn’t neutralize 82g of milkshake sugar.
